I haven’t been this excited for a Stanley Cup match-up in years. New York vs. Los Angeles. A battle of the coasts. Does it get any better?
My love affair with ice hockey began in the 90s when my dad would take us to MSG to watch the New York Rangers play. Anyone would have fallen in love with the sport. The Rangers were a cup-winning team with Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Brian Leetch, Mike Richter and Adam Graves (first childhood crush). We have the best memories.
Since college graduation, we’ve been all over the map. We were die-hard Capitals fan when we lived in DC. My sisters and I were on an ESPN Caps commercial, see below.

Warning: the beers are lethal at the Verizon Center. You could end up fracturing your foot (yes, that happened). Cheers to double chins!
As an LA resident, I cheered on the Kings (solely because of our friend Jonathan Quick who is easily the best goaltender in the league). I’m a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks and at times the Detroit Red Wings (happy, John?). I think I’m what one would call a fair-weathered fan?
Two things have remained steadfast though. My dislike for the Pittsburgh Penguins. And The Sharks? No way, Jose (get it?).
And now I’m left to choose between the Rangers and the Kings. After a quick (no pun intended) debate at home, I’ve decided to honor my roots. For the next couple weeks, we’re New York fans rooting for blue. It’s been a long time since they’ve brought the cup home. Side note: it will also make signing onto Facebook more tolerable as my newsfeed is bombarded with East Coast friends professing their love for the best city in the world! The best hockey team in the world! The best fans! 😉
Well played, New York.
Let’s go Rangers!! I think?
